Did you do a lot of research about disabled veterans to tell Maggie’s story in Finding Christmas?

Yes. I did research on two fronts. The first part had to do with the injury and amputation Navy pilot Maggie sustained when her plane crashed. I talked to physical therapists, doctors, nurses who specialized in burns, and prosthetists, who design the prosthetics for amputees. There are so many layers of treatment, and I wanted more than anything to be accurate.

The other part of my research had to do with PTSD. Women experience it differently than men, and there are a lot of stereotypes about vets who are suffering. I consulted with two wonderful trauma counselors, and wove what I learned into Maggie’s character.
